Classroom Etiquette

While attending online classes, you are expected to demonstrate the same etiquette as students attending classes on campus. Each Speech@NYU class session requires your full attention. Here are guidelines to follow when preparing to attend online classes:

Gather the Required Technology

The virtual classroom requires a strong, reliable, hard-wired Internet connection and a phone. You also need a desktop or laptop computer with a webcam – classes may not be taken on a smartphone or a tablet. Live technical support is available during each class.

Attend Each Live Class Session

Attendance at live class sessions is mandatory throughout your enrollment. Faculty members may work with you in case of emergencies, but otherwise, you are expected to participate in each live session. Log in at least a few minutes early so that you have ample time to connect.

Find an Appropriate Location

Your location affects not only your learning experience but also that of your classmates. Plan ahead so you have access to a place that is relatively quiet and well lit and has little background noise. Avoid distractions such as other people walking in and out of your webcam view.

Practice Good On-Camera Etiquette

Throughout each class, ensure that your camera is directly facing you so your entire face appears on the screen. Remember that everyone in the virtual classroom can see what you’re doing and what’s going on behind you. Avoid eating and doing other activities that could be distracting.
