Funding Your Education with NYU Steinhardt

Funding Your Education

Graduate school is an investment in your future, and as you apply, it’s important to consider the cost of attending grad school and how you will fund your education. Fortunately, there are resources to help you cover the cost of earning your graduate degree from NYU Steinhardt.

  • Scholarship Opportunities
  • Employer Assistance
  • Military Benefits
  • Federal Student Aid

Scholarship Opportunities

Organizations outside of NYU offer scholarships to graduate students. An Internet search will help you find what’s available. You can search for scholarships based on geographic region, professional affiliation, field of study, and more. Your admissions counselor can tell you if NYU offers scholarships for your chosen program.

Employer Tuition Assistance

Many employers offer full or partial tuition assistance. This may take the form of a reimbursement to you or a direct payment to NYU. Note that many companies tie tuition assistance to terms of required service.

Military Education Benefits

If you, your spouse, or another eligible family member has served in the United States military, you may be eligible for benefits offered through the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Enrollment certification is required for military benefits, and the NYU certifying official in the Registrar’s Office can certify your enrollment. Apply for military education benefits online at vets.gov.

Federal Student Aid

Loans can also help cover the cost of your education. Federal student loans are offered by the US Department of Education and disbursed by NYU. Graduate students may borrow Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct Graduate PLUS Loans from the federal government; PLUS Loan approvals are based on credit history.

Loans begin accruing interest when they are disbursed, and they go into repayment six months after you either:

  • Cease to enroll in classes
  • Fall below the minimum number of credit hours
  • Graduate from your program

Each academic year, federal loan interest rates change, and you must reapply to receive new loans. Federal loans made during each annual time period will have the same fixed rate for the life of the loan.

For more information on federal loans, visit StudentLoans.gov.

How to Apply

To apply for federal aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov and use NYU’s school code: 002785.

If you decide to apply for federal student aid, you should complete the FAFSA at the same time you complete your application for admission. Once your FAFSA is processed and you have been admitted to NYU, the Office of Financial Aid will determine your financial aid package. You must complete the FAFSA each academic year to remain eligible for federal aid.

Accepting Your Loan Package

Once you are admitted and have a FAFSA on file, NYU Financial Aid will prepare a package for you. After NYU notifies you via email that your package is ready, you can view and accept it in Albert, NYU’s student portal. Your package will meet the cost of attendance and includes tuition and fees plus cost-of-living expenses.

You will then visit studentloans.gov to complete your Entrance Counseling and electronically sign a Loan Agreement Master Promissory Note (MPN) for each federal loan borrowed. MPN is your legal promise to pay back your loan, interest, and fees. A separate MPN is required for each loan you choose to borrow, including PLUS Loans.

Entrance Counseling and MPNs must be completed before loans can be disbursed. All loan funds are disbursed directly to NYU.

Tuition and Fees

Now that you’re aware of the financial support that’s available, let’s break down NYU Steinhardt’s tuition, fees, and payment options.

Tuition is calculated on a per-credit basis, and you can expect a small percentage increase each academic year. Check our website for the most up-to-date costs.

In addition to tuition, you will also pay registration and student services fees based on the number of credits you take each semester. Programs with an immersion have additional costs, including travel costs, lodging, and fees.

NYU Deferred Payment Plan

The NYU Bursar offers a deferred tuition payment plan. You must pay a percentage of the balance and a nonrefundable fee upon enrollment, and finance charges accrue on the outstanding balance after the final payment is due. Late payments are charged an additional fee. For more information about the Deferred Payment Plan, visit nyu.edu/bursar.
